What it is
You'll have a tray of sand and a wide collection of miniatures (small figures and objects). You build a scene that represents what's going on inside, whether that's a feeling, a relationship, a memory, or a question you're carrying. Then we explore it together. The sand itself is part of the experience: we use a soft, clean, silica-free therapy sand that feels calming and grounding in your hands.
There's no right way to do it, and no artistic skill needed. The scene often reveals patterns, feelings, and connections you didn't know were there, and once you can see something, it becomes easier to understand and change.
Who it's for
- Kids who don't yet have words for what they feel
- Teens who shut down in face-to-face conversation
- Adults who overthink and intellectualize and want a way in that bypasses the analyzing mind
- Anyone working through grief, trauma, family changes, or a major transition
Benefits
- Gives shape to feelings that are hard to name. What's tangled inside becomes something you can see and touch.
- Creates safe distance. Working through figures in a scene can make painful things feel more approachable.
- Calms the body while you work. The sensory experience of the sand helps ground you, so hard topics feel more manageable.
- Reveals patterns. Relationships, roles, and conflicts often show up in the tray in ways that surprise you.
- Engages more than the thinking brain. Touch, imagery, and creativity open doors that conversation alone can't.
A note for adults: yes, this is for you too. High performers are often surprised by how quickly sand tray cuts through the noise and gets to what matters.
