If you're a high performer, coaching probably feels like the natural fit. It's goal-focused. It's forward-moving. It speaks your language. Therapy, on the other hand, might feel like something for people who are falling apart, and you're not falling apart. You're just tired. And stuck. And maybe a little confused about why the strategies that used to work don't anymore.
Here's what might surprise you: good therapy does a lot of what coaching does. We set goals. We build plans. We track progress. The difference is what therapy can do in addition to that.
The real differences
Therapy is regulated. Coaching isn't. In Texas, a Licensed Professional Counselor is licensed and overseen by a state board. That means a master's degree, thousands of supervised clinical hours, a licensing exam, ongoing continuing education, and an ethics code with real accountability. Coaching has no required license, so training and standards vary widely from coach to coach.
Therapists are trained to see what's underneath. A therapist can recognize when "I'm stressed" is actually anxiety, depression, trauma, or a nervous system that's been in survival mode for years. We can assess, diagnose, and treat those things. A coach, even a great one, isn't trained or allowed to.
Your privacy is protected by law. What you share in therapy is covered by confidentiality laws, with a few clearly defined exceptions.
There are excellent coaches doing meaningful work. This isn't about one being good and the other bad. It's about knowing what you actually need.
Why more goals can make burnout worse
Here's the part high achievers don't love hearing. Setting goals and pressing toward the next achievement can feed the burnout cycle. If your sense of worth is tied to performance, every new goal becomes one more thing your nervous system has to survive. You hit it, feel relief for a day, and set a bigger one. Sprint, crash, repeat.
The car analogy
Imagine your car isn't running right and the tank is low. You fill it up, and for a while it drives fine. But the engine is still making that noise. Before long you're back at the pump, filling up more often, wondering why the car keeps struggling.
Coaching often fills the tank: motivation, structure, momentum. That's valuable. Therapy opens the hood. If something is going on with the engine, all the fuel in the world won't make the car run the way it should.

If you've had trouble setting goals, reaching them, or enjoying them once you get there, there's usually a reason. Sometimes that reason stems from old survival patterns: a childhood where love felt earned, a workplace that rewarded overfunctioning, or experiences your body still hasn't let go of. Those patterns live in the nervous system, not just in your thinking. That's why you can know exactly what to do and still not do it.
